SUMMARY:Chapter Visit to Santa Fe 2926 Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join the BMW Car Club of America New Mexico Chapter for the Annual New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society Open House on Saturday\, September 24\, 2022 at 9 am. The Open House will showcase the Society’s efforts restoring the Santa Fe 2926 steam locomotive. In addition to tours of the locomotive\, there will be model train displays\, historic vehicles and live music. \nSanta Fe 2926\, a Baldwin 4-8-4 steam locomotive originally built in 1944\, was part of the last group of steam passenger locomotives built for the Santa Fe railway. The railroad serviced the locomotive at the Albuquerque rail yards and used it in both fast freight and passenger service\, accumulating over one million miles of usage before its last run in 1953. The locomotive and a caboose were donated to the City of Albuquerque in 1956 in recognition of the city’s 250th anniversary and placed in Coronado park. In 2000\, the locomotive was moved out of the park and the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society began its restoration to full operational status. Since then\, thousands of volunteer hours and substantial monetary donations have brought the locomotive closer to operation. It moved under its own steam power in July of 2021 – the first time since 1953! \nWe will meet at 9:00 am sharp in the GSA parking lot at 1800 12th Street NW in the Sawmill District of Albuquerque.
